5 Things AQx will help you with during the Winter Season:

Injury Recovery & Prevention: AQx can help you recover and prevent injuries faster and more effectively than many programs, year round, but this is especially important in the winter months when recurring injuries tend to act up in the cold temperatures.

"Holiday Pounds": AQx Aquatic Training Shoes are proven to increase caloric expenditure by 9%! And, we all know those calories can really add up during the Holiday Season!

Stormy Weather: AQx products and programs are designed specifically to mimic your land-based training, so you don't have to sacrifice any of your training or work out goals just because it's cold, wet, or stormy outside.

Staying Warm: Our Zero Gravity Suit helps increase body temperature and keep you warm while you work out.

"Winter Blues": There's no doubt about it, exercise makes you feel better mentally, emotionally, and physically.

AQx Customer Spotlight: Pamela Corney

“As an athlete who relies on her legs and core in skating, AQx shoes have opened a new cross training door for me,” says Pamela Corney, 52, of Michigan. Pamela is an inline indoor short track speed skater and teaches water training classes at her local pool. “If it were up to me everyone would be training in AQx shoes as the results are measurable as I've proven to myself in my skates. With the AQx shoes assisting the work in the water my feet 'turn over' on land more quickly as necessary in skating.”

Pamela, who trains in her AQx shoes three to four times a week, has enjoyed many successes in her career as a speed skater which began at age 40. The one that shocked her the most was her gold medal in the National Veteran 2 Lady Relay in 2006. “I hadn't planned on competing at all that year when my team mate asked me to skate it with her and my coach, who knew more about my times than I did, urged me to…when we took gold I was pretty surprised…it was the best I’d ever skated.”

Pamela has been involved in many athletic activities throughout her life including basketball, baseball, spinning, water exercise, speed skating, and even powder-puff football. “I love MOVEMENT! Be it on a bike, skates, skis, sleds, I am moving every chance I can get.” She shares her love of athletics and movement with her two sons, one of which she enrolled in her first speed skating lessons with.

Pamela has lived in Michigan her whole life and for over 30 years was a business owner in Saint Clair, MI. At age 47, she moved to Warren, MI, where she is now an AEA certified Water Instructor and teaches classes with her AQx Aquatic Training Shoes. “They are superior in cushioning any landing I might do on deck during teaching while demonstrating,” says Pamela. Pamela has a busy schedule as she is also a certified USARS (speed coach teaching beginner inline speed skating classes) at SS2 Racing and a certified SPINNING Instructor.

“[I] wholeheartedly believe in the training methods Dr. Garry Killgore and his company utilizes.”

Thank you, Pamela and congratulations on all of your successes!

AQx Instructor Spotlight: Pauline Ivens

World Renowned Aquatic Fitness Specialist, Pauline Ivens, recently gave a workshop featuring AQx products in Cottonwood Heights, Utah at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center. The 3-hour “Just Running” workshop was held on October 30th and included 30 water exercise instructors, all of which wore AQx Aquatic Training Shoes. Pauline is a full-time presenter and has 37 years of knowledge and experience in movement education. She travels nationally and internationally teaching and training water exercise instructors, as well as writing and designing new materials for water exercise education. Workshops like the one in Utah are typical of her training programs.

Pauline first learned of AQx in 2005, when a former classmate from the University of Oregon, Guido van Ryssegem (who is now on the AQx Advisory Board), told her that AQx is something she would be very interested in and she should contact Dr. Garry Killgore, President/Founder of AQx, right away. “I did!” says Pauline and now she has been an AQx Master Trainer for over four years. The most exciting part of AQx for Pauline is finally meeting and working with a Track & Field/Cross Country coach and professional educator who is adamant that all athletes should train in the water. “I cannot emphasize how important this is,” Pauline states, “and how exciting for a water exercise person like me!”

She is very excited to be actively taking part in connecting many athletes’ land-based and water-based training through her work with AQx and Dr. Killgore. “For the water exercise world this is a major step in the right direction. For many years we have not been able to consistently attract athletes into the water. I knew before I met Garry that we were not offering athletes the training specificity that they need. Now I have met a very knowledgeable professional educator who can provide us with the detailed technique to get those athletes into the water consistently.”

Pauline operates her own business, Aqua Aerobics Unlimited, and created her own educational workshop called “Just Running” which features AQx products and programs but is designed specifically for the water exercise professional to gain an understanding of the water techniques. “My main focus is to help our water exercise professionals understand the technique and be able to teach the technique, so that we can start water running classes/sessions in our pools.”

“I am only interested in products that are backed up with research, and provide training for the users,” says Pauline. “Garry and the team at AQx have worked extremely hard to produce a high quality shoe that really does what it is designed to do! The engineering detail is phenomenal. The water exercise world has never seen anything like this. Garry is both meticulous and generous. He shares every possible detail about the training programs, workout options, and fitness benefits. His ongoing research has brought new and innovative aquatic gear to the marketplace. The Zero Gravity suit is truly ‘innovative!’…The aquatic therapy world is also benefiting from Garry’s research. The water is well known as a suitable environment for injury rehabilitation. The AQx products have been able to add a new dimension to the healing outcomes for many clients.”

More about Pauline:

Pauline is from England. She grew up on the Isle of Wight (well known location mentioned in one of the Beatles songs) and was a local swimming champion! Her love of sports led to a career in Physical Education, and she taught for many years at a British secondary school. Pauline’s sense of adventure led her to the United States in 1984 when she did a Fulbright Teacher Exchange with a PE Teacher from Oregon. That very special year launched a whole new direction for Pauline’s life and career. She returned to Oregon in 1988 and started her Masters degree in Adapted Physical Education at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

The university welcomed Pauline’s teaching skills, and she was immediately hired to teach a multitude of fitness classes, including aqua aerobics. She became the Program Coordinator for the Department of Physical Education and Human Movement Studies. Those were the wild days of high impact aerobics and the introduction of step training!

In 1990 Pauline added ‘adjunct faculty’ to her resume as she was invited to teach both undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation courses in elementary physical education at the university. Then in 1993 Pauline was offered the position of Director of Education at HYDRO-FIT Inc., and that shifted her career to a complete focus on water exercise.

It is now 21 years since that first day at U of O, and Pauline is still 100% passionate about movement education. She has become a nationally renowned presenter and instructor trainer in the water exercise branch of the fitness industry, is certified by AEA and ACE, and is a Training Specialist for the Aquatic Exercise Association. She is also a licensed NIA Teacher and Watsu Practitioner. Pauline is frequently published in AKWA and OnSite Fitness. In 1997 Pauline was awarded the Aquatic Fitness Professional Global Award for excellence in aquatic fitness leadership and education. She currently lives in Eureka, California.

“I am delighted to be a member of the AQx Team.”

Thank you Pauline! We are honored to have you!

An AQx Success Story: Kevin Clougherty

AQx recently received this testimonial from one of our many success stories, Kevin Clougherty. Kevin has been training with the AQx program at Pinnacle Health & Fitness in Fitchburg, Wisconsin with one of our terrific Master Trainers, Heidi Spidell. Here is his story:

"My name is Kevin Clougherty and I would like to share my own water running success story. I could not run more than a slow mile or two at most and on many days not even a quarter mile because of a past knee surgery.

I looked into the Pinnacle Health + Fitness deep-water running program with AQx sports master trainer Heidi Spidell as an alternative to land running. After a number of classes and individual training, I began to feel confident that I could run again. I went out to attempt a short run but actually ran 3 miles in 35 minutes without serious knee discomfort. I began training harder in the water. I went out running 2.5 miles with friends and this run included hills, again, no pain.

I then agreed to try a half marathon, fully realizing that I may be walking much of it but knowing I could go the distance. I ran the five miles of Crazy Legs first and had a successful run, averaging a 12-minute mile pace. I finished with no knee pain. Besides one 4-mile outdoor run just before the half marathon, I did the rest of my training in the water. I ran the entire race and finished in 2:30:00. With only minor knee pain and very minimal swelling, this was a very successful half marathon for me.

As a result of my continued water training, I feel confident that I have the ability to run forever. It is really nice to know that I can go for an occasional run with friends or do a fun run or race with my son if I really wanted to. Thanks to Heidi, AQx, and Pinnacle for making this possible."

Thank you Kevin for sharing your awesome experiences!

Dr. Killgore to be published in Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research

Dr. Garry Killgore (President/Founder of AQx) along with his associates Sarah Coste, Susan O'Meara, and Christina Konnecke will be published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Their article is titled "A comparison of the physiological exercise intensity differences between shod and barefoot sub-maximal deep-water running at the same cadence," and is expected to be out in the next few months. Their study proved that our AQx Aquatic Training Shoe increases energy consumption (caloric expenditure and oxygen consumption) over running barefoot in the water and offers a very similar response, and in fact, slightly higher energy consumption to what is typically found during land-based running.

More information will be posted when the article is published.
